Cash for Classrooms Will Drive New and Exciting Water Education Programs

ROWLAND HEIGHTS, CA (January 10, 2017) –Rowland Water District is pleased to announce this year’s EduBucks winners who were recently selected for their dedication and commitment to providing a water-based curriculum. Teachers from Santana High School, Blandford Elementary School and Jellick Elementary School were among the 21 applicants to receive EduBucks this year from Rowland Water through its partnership with Water Education/Water Awareness Committee (WEWAC).

WEWAC’s goal is to introduce new water-wise habits in local schools. The EduBucks program drives teachers to think outside of the box with creative water activities, curriculum and field trips for their classes. For over 20 years, Rowland Water and WEWAC have awarded up to $600 per applicant to different schools, teachers and organizations. This year, each of the three local winners received $600 for use in their classrooms.

“We have an extremely robust education program here at Rowland Water and the EduBucks award is an added bonus for our educators to get students excited to learn about water,” said Tom Coleman, Rowland Water District General Manager. “We were very excited to have three of the winners assist us in promoting the importance of water.”

Jellick Elementary 3rd graders will be heading to the UCLA Stunt Ranch to learn about water quality and the water cycle. The Horticulture students from Santana High School will be designing a xeriscape garden with a drip irrigation system and the 2nd grade students from Blandford Elementary School will be utilizing a specialized water workshop to test their knowledge on water.

A representative from Rowland Water will visit all three classrooms during the month of April to ensure that projects have been completed. Each teacher awarded is also required to submit pictures, a final budget, and a write up of what the students learned to confirm that it aligned with the original scope of the project.
